Finding the perfect dress starts with knowing your measurements! Follow this step-by-step guide to make it simple and stress-free.
Step 1: Gather Your Tools
Before you start measuring, you’ll need:
A flexible cloth measuring tape (avoid metal, wooden, or construction measuring tapes)
A pencil and paper to record your measurements
A friend or family member to help (or a mirror if you’re measuring solo)
Pro Tips for Clothing and Support:
Wear close-fitted clothing, like leggings and a fitted t-shirt
Avoid sports bras, bandeau bras, sweaters, or baggy clothing
We recommend wearing the bra you plan to wear on the day of your event
If you don’t have that bra, choose one with underwire for support but no padding
Step 2: Take Your Measurements
For the most accurate fit, measure your bust, waist, hips, height, and hollow-to-floor carefully. Stand naturally, don’t suck in or push out. The goal is to capture an honest reflection of your body as it is.
Pro Tip! While measuring your bust, waist, and hips, keep the measuring tape 1) parallel to the floor and 2) flat against your body without digging in. Remember, the tape can be too tight even if it doesn't hurt - watch for any skin pushing out above or below the tape. To ensure the tape isn't too tight, you should be able to slip at least one finger underneath it comfortably.
Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your bust. Have your helper position the tape while your arms are lifted, then lower your arms once it's in place to take the measurement. Be sure to leave a little breathing room! Keep in mind that this measurement is not your bra size.
Waist: Bend to the side to find the natural crease of your waist. Wrap the tape snugly around your waist, and remember to breathe normally while measuring!
Hips: Stand naturally with your feet together and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips.
Hollow-to-Floor: Kick off your shoes for this one! Place the top of the tape at the hollow of your neck - that little dip at the center of your collarbone - and measure straight down to the floor, following your body's natural curve.
Height: Measure from the top of your head to the floor. The easiest way to nail this measurement is to mark the top of your head against a wall with a sticky note and pencil, then measure from the mark down to the floor.
Step 3: Compare Your Measurements to the Size Chart
Open the size chart for your dress category (Bridesmaids, Bridal, Junior Bridesmaid, or Flower Girl). Each size reflects the ideal customer measurements, and standard sizes include built-in ease for comfort, so the dress won’t feel too tight if your measurements match.
If your measurements fall between two sizes, we generally recommend choosing the larger size. Remember, it’s always easier to take a dress in than let it out!
Alternatively, you can order both sizes through our At-Home Try-On Program to see which fits best before making your final decision.
Final Checks
Always remember to double-check your measurements and make sure you’re using the correct size chart for your dress category. Standard sizes are returnable so you have flexibility if something isn’t perfect.
